“Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.” ― Mark Twain (and a constant change in scenery.)
You always see in the movies about people who get bored and decide to pick up and leave...seems to always work for them...so I decided to give it a whirl even if I wasn't traveling alone.
My first stop was Oxford, MS to visit college friends. Short trip, but still worthwhile. Not much to look at, but I got to see the Ole Miss campus again and see friends.
Second stop was Denver, Colorado. Now that's a state that has a lot to see and offer. Main adventure was Pearl Street in Boulder. If the shopping, food and street performers aren't enough ... people watching will satisfy. Remembering a movement I learned about in Sociology, the slow food movement, I tried to stay a little detached from my phone and engage in my surroundings. I found I was able to tune into friends and life a lot easier, but still occasionally taking my phone out to snap and post photos. A friend from home pointed out I didn't take many people photos - but there were just so many other things to document! I wanted to remember the scenery -- a change in scenery was the purpose of my trip after all.
While on pearl street, we stopped in a used bookstore and I found numerous books, some fiction and some psychology. I love books and reading even if it makes me a nerd. They weighed me down a little bit, but completely worth it.
Now let's talk about the mountains - absolutely breathtaking. Standing there looking at the snowy peaks made me appreciate how much the world has to offer. The world has a way of reminding you how small your troubles actually are.
After a week it was time to say goodbye and leave, but we'll be back! As a side note to my friends -- I apologize for the moments I needed food or coffee...but y'all still love me anyway (don't lie).
That's why I liked the above quote by Mark Twain...good friends, good books and a good tendency to follow your own intuition - not somebody else's.
